ESHE’s Behavior Change Communication (BCC) intervention focuses on improving household practices through multi-channeled promotion of small do-able health actions families can easily do. Channels include:

Interpersonal communication through Community Health Promoters (CHPs): CHPs are volunteers selected by the community and trained by health facility staff to carry out health actions for themselves and their families and communicate messages to their neighbors.

Family Health CardFamily Health Card (FHC): A communication tool distributed to families to help carry out small do-able health actions at a household level and encourage them to seek available health services from the nearest health facility. The FHC helps parents and health workers identify healthy practices and steps needed to ensure good health of pregnant women and mothers and proper growth and development of children. It helps track the child’s proper growth and document historical health data.

Immunization Diploma Immunization Diploma (ID): A motivational tool to encourage mothers/parents to complete on schedule the entire series of vaccination services for their children. The ID is the first diploma a child receives before his/her first birthday. Parents proudly show it to neighbors, relatives, and friends, promoting immunization services in every village. ESHE introduced the awarding of ID by health facilities to children fully immunized before one year of age.

Mass Media Support: ESHE uses mass media (mainly radio) to reach wider audiences and create synergy among various communication channels and approaches. The main activities are:
  • Develop and broadcast Expanded Program for Immunization (EPI) radio spots.
  • Train radio producers to integrate child health messages in existing programs.
  • Build capacity of producers on developing interesting health programs.
  • Strengthen Regional Health Bureau and Regional Radio Station collaboration to promote healthy practices.
